1st US Italy Seismic Bridge Workshop

SUMMARY OF WORKSHOP

April 19-20, Pavia, Italy

The U.S.-Italy Seismic Bridge Workshop was held on April 19-20, at the European Center for Training and Research in Earthquake Engineering (EUCENTRE) in Pavia, Italy. The workshop was attended by over 20 Italians, and 14 Americans, representing Academia, State DOTs, and the Federal Highway Administration. Professor Reginald DesRoches (Georgia Tech) and Dr. Phil Yen (FHWA) served as co-Chairmen of the US team, and Professors Gian Michele Calvi (Università degli Studi di Pavia) and Paolo E. Pinto (Università di Roma "La Sapienza") served as co-Chairmen of the Italian Team.

The workshop consisted of over 28 presentations focused on a range of diverse topics including earthquake ground motions, displacement based design, new code procedures, performance testing of bridges, soil-structure interaction, bridge fragility curves, regional seismic risk assessment, and innovative bridge retrofit methods. The presentations (20 min + 10 min Q/A) were intended to provide an overview of recent developments in each country, as well as areas for future development.

It was obvious from the presentations and subsequent discussions that both Italy and the U.S. are at the forefront in international developments in the area of seismic design of bridges. Participants, and particularly invited observers were pleased to learn of recent advances made in both countries. At the conclusion of the workshop, the Italian Ambassador to Pakistan, connected through a call conference, wished to express his appreciation to the participants, in consideration of the relevant activity of Italians and Americans in general, and of Eucentre and the ROSE School in particular, for the reduction of seismic risk in Pakistan after the recent seismic events.

Due to rapid advancements currently being made in the development and application of seismic protective systems technologies, it was agreed that a continuing dialog and exchange of information between the U.S. and Italy on seismic design of bridges should continue.
The workshop was hosted by Eucentre and the Centre of Research and Graduate Studies in Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology (ROSE School) of the Istituto Universitario di Studi Superiori (IUSS) of Pavia. The US delegation was supported by the FHWA, MCEER, and the National Science Foundation.
